More than 46 million Americans—including 16 million children—live in poverty. According to U.S. Census Bureau figures, the number of Americans living in poverty rose by 3.8 million between 2008 and 2009. From 2010 to 2013, the percent of Americans living in poverty remained steady at 15%. These rates are significantly higher in black and Hispanic communities.
